HOW TO TAME A WILD TONGUE

The text explores many themes. It is more focus on shame, culture, integrity and repression.

The caracters of this story are the narrator, Hilda her sister, Carito her brother and her mother.

The conflict is the fact that spanish's language and culture are not taken into account and the Spanish are losing more and more of their indentity, to be American, what makes their culture disappears.

The stting takes place in San Francisco.

The passages that stand out to me: "Who is to say that robbing a people of its language is less violent than war?"; "Wild tongue can't be tamed, they can only be cut out", "If you want to be an America, speak 'American'. If you don't like it,go back to Mexico where you belong.", "In my culture they are all words that are derogatory if applied to women-I've never heard them applied to men." ,"So if you want to really hurt me,talk badly about my language. Ethnic identity is twin skin to linguistic identity- Iam my language."

The text is divided into long paragraph that is chronological and it begins when she was student to when she was teaching. Each paragraph explains the differents "dialects" of Spanish ans the turns of spanish with time. The author noted some citations between paragraph and also some explanations of words. There is also a lot of word and sentences in spanish.

The storyteller is Gloria Anzaldua.

For the words,it is like the author weighed her words before using. We see that she want to explain with the best way, what she feels about all this, and it is a kind of high level, anyone can't understand it.

The author used metaphors or symbolism to explain us how bad and horrible the situation was. The author enhance the message by tying to make us understand how they where considered, how their culture was and is losing.

When we based on refferences that the author used,we can see that the story took place in the 1950's to 1970's.

We know that the author is Mexican, she moved to San Francisco during high school and she became an english teacher for "Chicano" students.

The author speaks about some things of her culture like food.

I nerver really had an experience that connected to this story because I never been ashamed for my culture but I ever been laugh for accent but I'm not ashamed for that. My culture helps me to understand the text because my culture is losing more and more for the benefit of another culture. The text relevant is relevant for me because it shows how the latin Americans feel here. I'm not the intended audience but I'm a part of the audience because it teaches me that I have to keep my culture and to not let it for the detrimrnt of another culture.
